Vapes vs. E-Cigs - What You Need to Know

If you’re on this page right now, reading our blogs about vaping and our Vesper One product, it’s probably not by accident. You may be an experienced vaper, looking for the best pod vaporizer you can find on the market, but it’s also entirely possible that you’re completely new to all this. You might have no idea where to start — you might not even know what vaping really is!

Our Vesper One vaporizer, while an amazing choice for vaping veterans, is also an amazing choice for newcomers, and that’s why we want to help vaping newbies understand some of the fundamentals. One question that’s often asked is the correlation between vaping and e-cigarettes.

In this blog, we’ll take a look at vaping and e-cigarettes. We’ll break down how the terms are related to each other, how they differ, and what it means for you.

What is An E-Cigarette?

The dangers of smoking nicotine are well-documented and have been for years, despite their time in the spotlight in decades past. Regardless, plenty of people, young and old alike, still fall into the habit of smoking cigarettes. Many attempts have been made to provide alternatives to smokers that allow them to wean themselves off of traditional cigarettes — nicotine patches are an example of this. But, advances in this field are being made all the time, and in the early 2000s, e-cigarettes were born.

E-cigarettes, often referred to as e-cigs, are nicotine delivery devices which create an inhalable vapor that’s similar to the smoke you’d usually get from cigarettes, but without the presence of tobacco.

E-cigarettes are electronic devices which contain a mouthpiece, battery (either disposable or chargeable), and what’s known as a “cartomizer,” which functions as a cartridge for e-liquid, as well as the atomizer, which is the core component that heats the liquid to create vapor.

Finally, e-cigarettes are generally designed to look and feel like traditional cigarettes. They function as a substitute or replacement for the real thing, and are thus created to evoke a similar feel. While there is a tremendous amount of variety in the different types of e-cigs you can find, most of them follow this rule.

What is a Vaporizer?

The creation of e-cigarettes opened up the doors to greater discoveries. Specifically, the idea of vaping in general. E-cigs were created to vaporize a liquid that allows you to inhale nicotine, but it wasn’t long before people started asking, “what else can be vaporized?” It wasn’t long until vaporizers were created.

Vaporizers, often called vapes, pod vapes, or vape pens, are portable devices which are designed to do exactly what an e-cig does — but with more variability, variety, and control.

Just like e-cigs, every vape has three fundamental components — the battery, atomizer, and e-liquid. When it comes down to it, that’s what you’re getting from any vape, but experimentation has led to several different variants, all of which have their own advantages. Here are some examples:

  • Vape Pens: Vape pens are the natural evolution of the e-cigarette. They’re similar in size, albeit a little bulkier for added strength. Some vape pens use replaceable cartridges for the e-liquid, while others have a refill mechanism.
  • Pocket Vapes: Pocket vapes are similar to vape pens, but they ditch the long, thin pen aesthetic for added power and versatility. Pocket vapes are typically rectangular in shape, have a better battery, and create more potent puffs than e-cigs.
  • Box Mod Vaporizers: Box Mods are the result of taking the vaporizing concept and cranking it to 11. Box mods have large battery box units, and often have some kind of screen or LED display which allows users to toy with the settings in order to create the strongest vaping experience possible. Box mods are often customizable and are generally regarded as the most feature-filled option for vaping.

Are All E-Cigarettes Vapes?

    Yes!

One of the most important things to know about e-cigs and vapes is that they’re actually the same thing from a functional standpoint. The biggest difference is in their labeling and intended use. E-cigs, for all intents and purposes, are designed to be substitutes for traditional cigarettes, so they often use proprietary cartridges which contain e-liquid that’s nicotine-based.

Despite being a vaporizer in and of itself, the e-cigarette continues to have its own label for a couple reasons. First off, it was the original mass-market vaporizer. Modern vapes as we know them are an evolution of e-cigarettes, not the other way around. Because of their status as the “original” vape, society still hasn’t quite let go of the e-cigarette nomenclature.

Secondly, many people who use e-cigarettes specifically seek them out as a substitute for the real thing. It’s not uncommon for an e-cig user to have no interest in vaping other substances, whereas vape users often have a variety of different e-liquids. Because of this, it’s still prudent for certain companies to brand themselves as an e-cigarette business — even if normal vapes do what is essentially the same thing

    Are All Vapes E-Cigarettes?

No, and yes! The answer to this one is a little more complicated.

Regular vapes can, in fact, use cartridges that are designed for e-cigarette products. After all, a vape is just an atomizer that converts e-liquid into vapor — as long as the cartridge is compatible with the vaporizer, it’ll work. So, if you buy a vape that’s not classified as an e-cigarette, you can still use it as such.

However, the difference between vapes and e-cigs is that they’re explicitly designed to vaporize much more than what you’d get from an e-cigarette. There are an incredible amount of things that can be vaporized. In fact, just for fun, some people have experimented with vaping weird and innocuous substances — such as mountain dew or hot fudge. We do NOT recommend this at Vesper, but it’s a simple example which shows that vaping isn’t just a replacement for smoking nicotine.

For an example, you need not look further than our own co-founder and CEO, Paul Pierce. Paul has long been an advocate of vaping hemp-based CBD oils as a way to cope with common issues such as pain, anxiety and stress. In fact, that’s one of the biggest reasons why he created Vesper, and our flagship product, Vesper One. CBD oils have zero nicotine and they don’t create a high, but they may have soothing, productive effects on the user.
